TIC was created in May 2008 as a translation and language solutions provider representing the institute, and as a contribution to the institute’s Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) program. As part of its mandate to enhance GIIT’s cooperation and partnership with inter-governmental and governmental bodies and the local business community, TIC has been providing UN agencies, including UNEP, UN-HABITAT and FAO, local authorities, and China-based businesses with quality translation service. TIC also serves as one of GIIT’s on-the-job training centers, with tailored internship programs – a real project-oriented learning opportunity for GIIT’s translation students to gain marketplace-relevant experience that may not be directly attainable in a classroom situation.

Translation and Language solutions

As an integral part of GIIT, one of China’s most prominent interpreting and translation training organization, TIC boasts abundant language expertise and resources needed to deliver on client expectations for the best possible translation and language solutions in China.

On top of that, TIC has been implementing a rigorous quality control procedure that proves effective and efficient in meeting the most demanding translation needs, including millions of words in on-going projects for UNEP, UN-HABITAT, FAO and China’s State Council Information Office each year, as follows:

- Pre-translation processing: New documents are analyzed using industry-standard tools to find repetitions and identify reference
- Draft translation: Collaborative in-house translation, using the materials identified in Step 1, and a real-time synchronized glossary for reference;
- Peer review: Translators review each other’s work to ensure coherence and consistency in wording and style;
-Second review: Individual pieces are compiled into a single document and reviewed by the project manager to identify any mistakes or discrepancies;
- Final review: The document is then sent back to all participating translators for a final review with a special focus on the format, typos and numbers;
-Delivery and follow-up: After delivery, the translation memory, knowledge bases and glossaries are updated accordingly for future use.

Internship Programs

TIC’s internship programs offer translation students the opportunity to:

- be exposed to regular UN translation projects and a variety of other translation assignments, by working with a trusted translation service provider for UN agencies, local government bodies and business communities;
- learn about the quality assurance process through which printer-ready translations are produced on time, by working collaboratively with TIC’s in-house translators;
- improve their translation skills through work assignments under the close supervision and guidance of TIC’s experienced in-house translators;
- gain a deeper understanding of the marketplace and the impact of the work TIC does; and
- be inspired to pursue excellence in their future translation career and develop a stronger sense of professional responsibility.

TIC offers short-term and on-going internship programs.

The short-term program runs over the winter and summer vocations only, for a period of 6-8 weeks. The regular work schedule is 9:00 am to 5:00 pm with one-hour lunch break. Dedicated to support the optimization of GIIT’s regular translator training program, TIC receives all of the institute’s translation students as short-term interns. They work on a number of not-too-urgent assignments for the client under the supervision and guidance of TIC’s in-house translators.

The on-going program may last for the whole duration of an intern’s studies at GIIT. Interns are given more demanding texts to translate, still under the close supervision of TIC’s more experienced staff. Working schedule is relatively flexible and they may work from home, with no fixed office hours required. The selection process is highly competitive. Interns are selected only if they prove to be:

- good translators with a keen sense of professional quality and responsibility;
- capable of working under pressure and delivering on time; and
- excellent at teamwork and coordination.

After completing this program, some students may qualify for an employment with TIC. TIC evaluates candidates based on their translation skills and the level of dedication and motivation to contribute to TIC’s work.
